Disappointed by his lack of luck in having a son, Danaë's father Acrisius was warned by the oracle at Delphi that he would one day be killed by the son of his daughter and Zeus. He therefore imprisoned his daughter in a bronze chamber, in the courtyard of his palace, to keep her childless. But the chamber was open to the sky, and that's how the shower of golden rain got in.
